Facebook is removing videos with copyright content such as videos and background music. Just this week, a video I created when my family and I cut down the xmas tree in 2008 (uploaded Dec. 29, 2008) got removed proactively due to the Feliz Navidad song I used for background music. I’ve seen YouTube do that before and some sites that just remove the audio track depending on what part of the video has the copyright material. You must acknowledge the message or file a counter if you think they are incorrect.
Here is a snapshot of the message I received when I logged into Facebook today (also received it via email):

I just received this very message. I am SO irritated. I pay for my music downloads legitimately through iTunes and make private vlogs that I post to my private facebook page that do include my legally purchased music as background music. I don’t know what facebook should do. I wish they would simply leave my videos alone.

The same has happened to me too!
I purchased the music at Wal-Mart specifically for my private home made videos. And they weren’t cheap. If I buy music for this purpose and they destroy my video, isn’t this imposing on my rights? Why buy music if you can’t use if for personal use! … . I’m the one feeling ripped off and being infringed upon.
I would delete my account completely if it weren’t for my son in Iraq!

Your rights aren’t being infringed upon – you can create that video and enjoy it at home, or send it via email. But to put it out there in the public sphere is a different animal. I found this forum because I had a video blocked recently but I see people barking up the wrong tree.
Also, buying music at Wal-Mart doesn’t give you rights to the music, it just gives you the music for your own personal use.

Did you read the comments you were replying to? The guy said his PRIVATE facebook page. That’s the difference. I can invite my friends around to my house and show them my photos. facebook, and the web, mean I don’t have to invite them to my house – they can be on the other side of the world.
Equally, when my friends are in my house I can put the music I bought in Walmart on my stereo while we look at photos, because that’s personal use. But I can’t combine the music and photos online even amongst my friends, because facebook and the RIAA (or whoever) won’t let me use the music I’ve paid for to do this.
At least Google\YouTube are actively looking at ways to sort this. Fine – include a link to the Amazon listing for the album, or ask me to pay a small surcharge. But just deleting my video? That’s a really bad user experience.

I too have uploaded slide shows I have made of my kids. I can’t believe that they remove it. Do you think someone actually complains or do you think Facebook does this on there own?

Yes, I do believe that have a contractor to look thru all the videos on a weekly basis and remove them. YouTube does the same thing. It’s a legal issue and they have no choice.

it’s a legal issue with a LOT of grey area. We are entitled to the same use of the music (much like Dj’s and radio programs) under the FAIR USE clause under the Copyright laws. However, even though Youtube.com has gradually allowed more and more copyrighted material so long as credit and/or the ability to embed the video is disabled. HOWEVEr, the business practitioners in palo alto (facebook headquarters) are too cowardice to fight against the RIAA, the governing agent behind copyrighted music. Mind you, the RIAA is also the same company which 50 years ago attempted to ban all music from ever being played on the radio or in social gatherings. Talk about a fascist organization.
Facebook doesn’t have the testicular fortitude to fight against the RiAA so they just give in like the losers they are.

Mine was taken down literally five minutes after I dowloaded it to my private page. I uploaded it so only I would be able to review it before I posted it on my wall, but they didn’t even give me a chance to do that.

This has happened to me twice now- the second time being the ‘final straw’ for facebook. They have now disabled the video application on my profile, rendering my abilities to post any new videos void.
Needless to say- i’m pretty pissed.
The music i play in the background of my vlogs and wall posts is all legal. Who is going to rip 25 seconds of “a millie” played through an internal mic of my laptop?!

its not thet facebook and youtube have no choice, they are just spineless cowards that do not want to take the time to fight for their customer…their primary source of income (albeit advertisements). The music industry namely the nazi-esque RIAA has been attempting to censor and bar any usage of copyrighted music. Originally it was to prevent profiteering and or obtaining music by means other than original purchase. Then, the RIAA had the audacity to attempt to fight the radio stations telling them that they could not play their music, until they realized how much free advertising they were getting. Will the RIAA shape up? I highly doubt it. They need to be kept happy making their bouge 7 figure incomes so I say…go to limewire, share your music with the world and let the record labels suffer with harsh financial losses and then they will learn.

Just received one of these emails this AM. I am guessing because I used RHCP in the background since I recorded with no audio. Who the hell wants to watch a vid with no audio? If I could play guitar and sing I would put my own on there. What about all the vids with the radio on or a stereo playing? Is that not the same thing? I am not profiting from this, I am just making it more enjoyable to watch. Stupid RIAA and facebook.

I’ve received the same thing twice. It’s RIDICULOUS!!! I pay for all my songs legally on iTunes as well… and I PAY for it, to USE it! My word… what next? Is North Face going to make me blur their logo if I’m wearing their clothes in a video?!?! The artists shouldn’t have ANY problem with this, because really what they’re getting is FREE PUBLICITY!!! More people discover new music/artists via youtube videos, commercials etc than most of the other ways. PATHETIC, they need to grow up and quit acting like whinny little babies.

I suspect I am going to get one of these nastygrams soon. I spent HOURS editing this really cute video with stills from the last 8 months of an international assignment for my job in Spain. I am not making money from it…I simply wanted to sum up all of the fun I have had and share that with the friends I have made. I used “Do-Re-Mi” for the song. It was fine for about 12 hours but then I just got an email from someone saying that they tried to look at it and there was a message that it was removed due to privacy or copyright.
They need to get RIGHT OVER themselves. At this point, You Tube SUCKS because there’s nothing left on it anymore.

You paid for it to use it for your own personal use, not to be able to play it publicly. If you buy a movie, you don’t have right to open your own theater and start showing it. It’s lousy and it’s burned me on a number of uploads but it’s hard not to sympathize with the artists who are protecting their own work. Everybody wants to get paid.

Buying a movie and opening my own theater to show it is a terrible example. I’m not charging anyone to watch my video about camp on facebook. If anything I am drawing attention to the band, so people can go out and buy the song if they like it so much. It’s not like the artist isn’t getting paid, they’re simply being given ANOTHER avenue to have their music heard! Quit acting like artists are hurting in this way.

I made a video and posted it recently on FaceBook, that had some RATATAT in the background, and I credited them in the caption. They removed it and sent me the notification email, so I uploaded it again, and removed the credit from the caption, thinking it was probably a keyword finder program or something, but got another notice this morning, so it must actually be a live person.
I could see if I was using this in a feature film, or a commercial or something that I was profiting from, it being an issue, but it was a video of me building a kayak. If they no longer let me access videos, I’m deleting my account.

i made a video tribute in memory of a friend that past away and these BASTARDS thought it necessary to remove the video. It was just a slideshow using Leona Lewis’ “yesterday”. These heartless sons of bitches. I know where the head quarters is and if i didn’t have a steady head on my shoulders I would seriously consider sending them a major virus to completely screw up their programming. They have attempted to block my uploading, but osmehow I’ve always found a way around it. By the way, Youtube is no longer blocking copyrighted content, at least they haven’t in my case.

Thats not right. Everytime you upload a movie an vimeo it says: “Upload ONLY videos you create and have the necessary permissions to upload” besides that, vimeo has other large problems. real file encoding for example..

I worked freakin hard on a travel video and used background music that I purchased. This is BS! For the hell of it, I’m going to try reversing the audio track of my video and see if it still gets recognized.
Does anybody know if MobileMe restricts copyright protected content? I’m running out of options for sharing my vids. Am I going to have to burn and mail a DVD each time I create a movie??

Agree that is total crap. I tried to upload a short video with pictures and video that I took on a climbing trip to Yosemite Valley – removed within seconds because it had a background track that I paid for on iTunes.
What really pisses me off is that I tried to load it to Facebook to avoid freely distributing material – I made it available only to my Facebook friends, not the whole f-ing world. What’s next? If someone else is in the room and I play the video on my computer am I going to jail? What if I play music that I bought with my car windows down? Do the passerby have to block their ears or I pay a fine?
This is not a copyright issue – it is the “ways the RIAA can try to make money” issue. Distributing MP3s via file sharing programs? I agree – not okay. Using a single song to provide some background for independent filming and editing? Please. This is infuriating.

i just tried posting a video on my facebook me and my freinds made for a competition. We made a music video of Ace of Spades by motorhead (better be carefull this comment might get removed for saying the title). It got removed almost imidiantly for copyright purposes even though we had permission throught the competition to use the song. I am so sick of youtube and facebook being pricks about music. Do we not have any right of free speech anymore

I agree with many of you. Who knew that when we purchased a song that our use of the song would be so limited. It’s a shame really but what can we do? Is there anyway around it?

You’re misunderstanding copyright. You didn’t purchase the rights to the song. You paid for the recording so that you can have it for your own private use. Just like if you buy a movie you can’t open your own movie theater and start showing it.

Look, movies are not same with the movies. The music used in the videos are rarely played in full-length, cut down into seconds and most of the time has a voice over. music are used as a background music in videos, In other words, we modify the use of the music as a supplement to our videos. So, who would buy a pirated music recorder from our videos if it has voice overs? or cut down into a shorter version, It’s just like a demo reel that would help artists to be recognized. We can’t buy movies and show it on a theater house because the movies are played in full length there and that’s unfair for them. You know, not all people are musically talented to make their own music for their videos, they need other talents, that’s why they buy music, they cannot always rent live people because it’s time, money and energy hazard than buying music in iTunes, CDs and DVD form. That’s why we find it unfair for us who paid for the cds.

I am having the axact issue and I agree.It seems like the doctrine of “fair use” should apply here. It’s not reasonable for me to get permission from Carlos Sanatana before sharing my vacation video with 300 Facebook friends and I am certainly not going to be profiting from using his song.

3) It is free advertisment for the artist
Instead of our videos getting taken down, we should be PAID for advertising.

I uploaded a video of my family on vacation, but to squeeze a bunch of clips into one video but still make it entertaining I put music in the background. A few minutes after it uploaded I got the same message. And this was the SECOND time I did it! The vacation video had the song “Everytime We Touch” in it… And the other video was just a lot of clips of me and my friends with the song “I’m Only Me When I’m With You.” But they didn’t delete that! (yet) I want to put music in my videos, but I don’t want to lose my video privledges (I enjoy filming) or lose my facebook account! Making another account would be to inconvenient… I expected this from YouTube but not from Facebook. 😦

Well, let’s deconstruct this: The problem is that Facebook make money through providing a service/content that is supported by advertising. People go on there and share info, and while they share information, they are subjected to ads.
If the content that people share winds up having been copyrighted by someone else, then it Facebook is in legal jeopardy. In other words, the users are sharing the info under their Fair Use, but since that info becomes part of the service from which FB derives its profits, the company is in clear legal jeopardy because it is making money from content that it does not own, regardless of whether it was the users’ Fair Use or not.
So yeah, it’s annoying for FB users — I went through it myself — but I can definitely see FB’s legal dilemma.

Use dropbox.com – they let you upload for free and then post a link to your video on facebook.
You would think that artists & music companies would appreciate the free advertising from fans… I think what really ticks me off is that the only people suffering ARE the FANS!!

It happened to me once and it bugged me so badly I almost quit Facebook. Why isn’t my Wall and my Profile MINE. If I invite people over my house I play music or we watch movies. FB is the same dang thing but only virtual because we can’t always physically get together, especially at great distances. Does anyone know if MySpace does the same thing?

I’m having an issue with this except I’m not being notified of the copyright infringement! My video just disappears – a friend got the message. The part the frustrates me is I have a commercial license to use the music in mine and I’m not getting the chance to contest it. I am all for copyright protection, but there needs to be a fair rebuttal system in place, expecially for fan/business pages!

I too ran into FaceBook removing my videos because I had background music in my own videos (video that I took and own the rights to). I found a way around it. Place blank video or text before your video. In other words, a video that has nothing before the video you want to upload. I think FB check the first part of a video and if nothing registers, it gets accepted. I accomplish this by creating my own Fox Studio movie intro (like you see at the start of movies) and place this before my clips. Google Fox Video Blender for info. Videos of mine with music will not be allowed due to copyright issues. Same video with the intro gets accepted. You may be able to do the same thing by just placing text and blank screens in front of your video (say for 30 seconds or so) and see if that works. I use a Mac, iMovie, the Blender Fox Logo program, and upload it when finished. Has worked for me for years. Cheers.

Yeah, this has happened to me 5 times. I edit videos for college. I now upload all my songs before hand to “test” to see if it is copyrighted on there or not. It is a HUGE pain.

I had this same problem.
Every last friday of the month, me and my colleagues get together to perform to a song we have chosen that is relevant to a theme night, for example, a few months ago we did Country & Western and chose Steps – 5,6,7,8 as the song. Three of us dressed as girls and there was originally going to be two guys, but someone else wanted to be involved, so we had three.
I always get these performances recorded on video and have lately started using music from TV shows, and for the 60’s theme we did, I used the music from US TV show ’24’… It begins with a count down clock and nine brief descriptions of events that happened through the 60’s, such as walking on the moon and Martin Luther King giving his famous speech to the masses. The first bit of music I used was the Armin Van Buuren remix of the ’24’ theme, obviously within the video the performance happens, then at the end I used the ’24’ credits with the end theme also. Now I do not make any financial gain with these videos, they are for entertainment purposes only! Also I like to do them as a hobby and they show my creative and editing skills… I do credit the writers within the credits at the end so surely I am not commiting infringement of copyright if I credit the writers? (Also not making any money out of them!?)

I had the same thing happen to me like three times, now with the new facebook i can no longer post videos at ALL! I also pay for all my songs through iTunes, and I worked really hard making all my little movies, and spend a lot of time choosing those songs. I understand them taking it off their site (i guess…) but it’s not fair that i can’t post any videos!! Facebook use to be cool but this is just getting ridiculous. I ALWAYS credit the songs! It’s free advertisement I just don’t understand!

It’s a tough situation for a company to be in where they want to please the users/members but they also need to stay within their legal rights of content they host. Perhaps things will change in the future but I think right now nothing is going to change.

Ok. SO! i uploaded a custom music video on facebook to show my friends using footage from sons of anarchy and a track by breaking benjamin… now i have posted other music video’s just fine. but for SOME reason even tho i posted this: “A music video i made to show my friends by request. i do NOT own any rights to neither the video or the music found in this video itself. all video rights belong to FX , and all audio rights belong to Breaking benjamin. im just using this for entertainment reasons under the “Free use” right , please watch and enjoy , and be sure to look forward to S.o.A Season 4 this september!” Less then 2 minutes later , Blocked , same bullshit mesaage saying i was copyrighting , and a email stating the same…… any idea’s what i did wrong here?… as i said , ive posted other music video’s just fine on my facebook without any problems whatsoever…..please help.

I’m really irritated. Facebook denied my own travel video with some obscure foreign music playing in it. I uploaded to YouTube without a problem. If all else fails I’ll put it on my own server and serve it. There’s always a way around the bullshit they try to impose on open communication. Yes….just lost my ability to upload videos!!!!, irritates the hell out of me. I just added background music on iMovie, they removed it and I got the following email

Does anyone know how to get facebook to ENALBE your Video uploads After they DISABLE IT? I kept trying to upload because it didn’t tell me the reason it wasn’t uploading, or being removed after i uploaded. so they didabled my upload videos. now i can’t do anything. and I love to make little video’s for my son’s baseball & hockey teams, for him & His friends. I’ve been doing it for months & now i can’t…but how do you even expain to facebook that you used video from your own camera, & the music you used was bought & from itunes? can or will they even reverse the “UPLOAD Video” option? Grrrrr

I had a slideshow with photos from my garden with a song off a CD that I bought and paid for. I thought it would be nice for my family and friends to look at my photos while listening to some relaxing music… Facebook deleted it. Then because I had several other slideshows made with family and music in the background that had already been there since last year… they now have my account where I can’t even upload a video. I never use music I haven’t paid for and all my slideshows are ones I have made myself… and I am not making any money off of them. What do they think, people that like the music is going to haul my slideshow around with them??? Seems like I was promoting the music for the artist. NOT HAPPY!!!

just for everyones notice, I created a Music Video with some friends to “Gettin’ Over” by David Guetta, and the first time I uploaded it I got the stupid copyright message, then I went back into sony vegas, changed the pitch to 5% and uploaded it again to Facebook, and it worked, i havent had a message from them about this yet.

I just experienced this yesterday! I made a slideshow of my nail art and posted it on facebook and they deleted it. I even checked on youtube to see if the 2 songs that I had in the slideshow were banned from there. And when I saw that other people used the songs with no problem I figured that facebook wouldn’t have a problem with it but I WAS WRONG!
I don’t understand facebook, they allow people to post all kinds of raunchy sexual madness, And some of the profiles with this stuff on it are CLEARLY of underaged young people but I now have to get a blogger site to showcase my work because I’m playing P.M. Dawn And Tears For Fears? GIVE ME A BREAK! I swear I keep finding more and more reasons to delete my facebook account!

I have had a family slide show removed from Facebook it was made using all my own backgrounds with photoshop brushes I had created or legally downloaded that were able to be used but must not be resold.. My facebook is closed to all other than my friends and the cd music in the background was purchased by me then ripped to my computer to be used in the slideshow. I believe that the rules of copyright are that you can reproduce music if you purchased the original cd and it can be used for non profit purposes and can be shared among friends which my secure face book site is… Any ideas anyone do I fight this or let it slip. There is absolutely no infringement to the best of my knowledge.

Last night I post a slideshow with photos of my friends with a song off a CD that I bought and paid it cash for it. My friends so happy for that slideshow with a nice music, But then few hours later Facebook deleted it! and I god Notification about copyrights…. This is really irritated me, the music become famous and hear to the wolrd not bcos of the music companies promotion but mostly bcos promotion from people use their music in internet that show to all over the world. I made a video montage of my memories from the World Trade Center (was working there on 9/11). I took all my photos from before and after 9/11, and compiled a nice piecae as a tribute to my friends and colleagues who survived and to those that didn’t. Used God Bless the USA as a song in the background. FB removed the video the same day. Though I was using all my own photos, I apparently could not used the song in the background. They not only deleted the video, but all the comments and posting from friends from WTC that I had not heard from in a while, that would have been nice to read. So I uploaded the video on Youtube and reposted the link on FB in honor of tomorrow. I hope they don’t take it down. I mean, don’t they have other things to worry about?! Really. I did file a counter notification, and still have not heard back from FB.

This is really annoying. I just made a video/slideshow which is just gonna be for close family and friends to view..and after it uploaded facebook removed it because I have Good Life – ONeRepublic as the background music..I’ve done this for years and its ony for family and friends anyway..and like what everyone else was saying i’m NOT distributing the music or promoting the artist..like they need it…again..the video was only for CLOSE FAMILY/FRIENDS and they removed it..i think its soooo annoying and a bunch of BS!!

First of all let me say that I do totally agree with you all and think that we should be able to upload videos to FB or youtube with cool or meaningful music. I myself have made videos and uploaded them only to have them removed, with FB citing copyright issues. So, I looked into it and now I can kind of understand why this is the case. Whilst we all personally will think that our videos and accompanying music selections is the cutest, happiest or saddest montage around, spare a thought for the artists whose songs are being used to reflect such happy, sad or cute moments. Let’s face it, everyone has such varying opinions; whose to say that a video that someone thinks is innocent and pure might have other connotations and then this music, this artist, this career is then reflected in said video. Advertising and sponsorship deals are worth millions of dollars for this reason alone – artists, celebrities, athletes, they are all paid by companies to uphold an image or stereotype; be it fake or not, they still are paid to represent a certain image and they work hard to uphold this so that the public fall for it and buy into it. They don’t want to mess with this!
Imagine if you were an artist who had a successful track and then this music was added to a clip and uploaded on you tube or FB to a video montage of something you found offensive; imagine your song was used as a background track to street racing, to drinking irresponsibly.. the list is endless really.
And by the way, the Chris Brown song ‘Forever’ as used in the famous wedding video of them all dancing down the aisle was actually copyrighted to Sony and they had to approach Sony to ask them for permission. Sony had the right to remove the clip from You Tube or to choose the option of having the I-Tunes link on the video to purchase the Chris Brown song. They chose the latter and as a result, ‘Forever’ went to number 4 on I-Tunes. Fair enough I say. If we want to use other peoples music I think we should either pay for it or at least have the decency to ask them first.

I made a farewell video for my friend using the photos we took at the airport,a background music and upload it on facebook, seconds after that i received that message and it’s really disappointing! Since the whole world is on facebook now i guess it is the easiest way to share instead of burning dvds for everyone.This is really unbelievable. If youtube have no problems with it..what is up with facebook then? It’s not like i’m selling pirated songs or whatever. I’m sooo pissed and not happy at all!

Oh my gosh I know it’s so gay! I really like making videos of like vacations and birthdays but I can’t ever put them on Facebook because Facebook is retarded and won’t let me. YouTube will (for me anyways), but Facebook wont!!!!! I’m pretty sure Switchfoot would/t care if I had their music in my home videos….it would just advertise for them!!!!!!! Facebook you suck!!!!!!!

I had posted a video of when my high school marching band marched in the Macy’s Day Parade, and it disappeared one day. I thought, at the time, that the changes Facebook was making is what caused me to loose the video. This was about a year ago. After reading these posts today, I realize, it was probably removed due to copyright’s. That is infuriating. I put that video on there to share with my family, who all live in other states. I had also just gotten the gadget I needed to get the video off of a VHS tape, and onto the computer.

when they notify you of the infringement and you have to either acknowledge the notice or file a counter claim, I just file a counter claim. Doesn’t seem to matter what you type in there. Just file it and you video is re-posted. Done it several times now and my videos are still there.

I have just had my video downloading turned off by Facebook for “repeated” copyright infringements. The repeated infringments they talk about were a couple tornado damage events that were video taped from cars with their radios playing music, and 1 other clip that is readily to the public on Youtube. This is not right but I can find no way to complain! Do we just have to accept this? Anybody have a clue about how to get this reversed??

Wow, I guess I’m not alone in this world! Geez, indeed this is f***ing irritating. I spent almost a week browsing to thousands of photos, making a photo collage, editing the video and almost half a day just trying upload it so it would available right by midnight on our anniversary, and we’re undergo on a long distance relationship, this video means so much to show him how I see our relationship through these years, then Youtube sent me message on copyright material, later on I tried to alternate by uploading it to Facebook, set it for a viewer of Friends only and indeed I immediately received the Alleged Copyright Violation and Facebook removed my video with a threat of banning video application and my Facebook account itself.
Then I undergo some research in forums it mostly explains: “the video/music content which you purchased/downloaded legally is solely for your hearing/viewing purpose, you have no rights to distribute or publish it under your own beneficiary without having the legal permission from the copywriter” But guys, HELLO, we all know that there are hundreds of clips in Youtube that contains a background music!
BUT WHO WOULD WANT TO WATCH PHOTOCLIPS WITHOUT BACKGROUND MUSIC?! AND NO, I’M NOT MAKING ANY BENEFIT FROM IT OR WHATSOEVER! I just wanna surprise my long-distance boyfriend on our anniversary! This pissed me off so much!

Just had my video deleted that I spend the last day making with iMovie. Bull shit! I was so excited to share my trip with my friends and family…it was taken down within 10 seconds of processing. I use facebook mostly for sharing pics and videos, but now that I cant do that it may be time to leave facebook for good. Fuck you Zuckerberg.

In reality, it’s PERFECTLY LEGAL to SHARE your music WITH YOUR FRIENDS. That’s all, I’m guessing, 99% of Facebook users who post videos with “coprywritten” music are doing, is sharing their music, the music they own by valid purchase, with their friends. Facebook has no place deleting people’s videos for doing what is protected by law, sharing the music you own with your friends. The law congress approved on the matter, says it’s ok for you to loan your CD to a friend, for you to play your music in your friends presence, essentially every act that is considered sharing your music is perfectly legal. This of course doesn’t cover COPYING your music, OR your friends COPYING the music you own. Essentially, if your friend uses his sound card to record the music you own and posted to facebook, your friend would be in criminal violation of copyright law. That’d be like you loaning him a CD that he then copied. None of that guilt falls on you, who legally shared the music, the full culpability falls on the person who acquires the music in breach of copyright. Which is nearly impossible to prosecute in most instances and not worth prosecuting in terms of social cost, people being hauled off to jail for not being able to afford music they’re compelled to attain!? The very premise is ridiculous. Which is why corporations, ignoring law, have bound together to harass social networkers and terminate access to music even provided perfectly legally, by music owners who choose to share their music with their FRIENDS. Anybody who wants to class action law suit against Facebook for this criminal harassment they’re issuing regularly against perfectly law respecting people, please count me in, friend me on facebook and send me a message as to the particulars of how I sign up as litigant to your class action suit.

I had a video my Dad made of my little sister and her friend yrs ago and he had a couple of songs playing in the background to it. It was uploaded a few months ago and I decided to tag the girls in it and they immediantly removed it when I did. What I don’t understand is I have two other slide shows on there with photos of my daughter and it has songs in the background and they have yet to remove them as well. Facebook is being absolutely ridiculous. Eventually this is gonna spread to youtube and get completely out of hand and youtube will be rendered useless.

Most of the comments here are about using original recordings of the original artists. All i wanted was to have a way to let people see me playing my versions of songs people would know. Now searching for my channel on youtube says it is potentially offensive or inappropriate just because a record company didn’t like one tune being played and one other tune i put up before also got a comment beside it about being matched content. How can videos seen by a small number of people possibly hurt a giant in the recording industry. No sampling, no lyrics just me playing a keyboard. Its farcical. Hoped facebook might be different but guess not.

Yeah what the hell. I just received the message after waiting 2 hours for them to convert the video file. Is a lame video anyway it’s a time laps of me and my girl putting a puzzle together. I had Awolnation playing as the background (the song I payed for through iTunes) who wants to watch that video in silence or with some stupid default piano riff through IMovie lol. I guess it’s going to get to the point where we all have to edit our video and blur out our tshirts and beer/soda bottles that might appear in the background lol. Facebook’s B/S

I just spent several HOURS making a thank you video for people who wished me happy B-Day through FB, I used the song In My Life from The Beatles just as background music, as most people here have said, a video without some meaningful music is rather boring or even useless. The song is a legal copy I have from iTunes. Damn you Facebook!

This just happened to me! I don’t understand how it is copyright infringement. Maybe I’m just not clear on what that means. I always thought it meant if you stole someone else’s material and claimed it as yours as well as making money on it. I used my very own video clips I recorded myself. The only thing not mine was the background music. This crap is getting ridiculous. You can’t steal and take with you permanently a song uploaded to someone’s video. I don’t get what the music companies would have against this stuff. I get piracy; I get downloading the music for free is something they don’t want. But listening to some music on youtube or in people’s videos on facebook? What’s wrong with that? If anything, it helps introduce people to music they may have never bothered to listen to before. Possibly pushing them to even buy said artists album! Anyway, my video was for personal use to share with my friends, not the world. In the scheme of things, that should have been fine.

This just happened to me. I saw the first posting was in 2009. In June 2010, I uploaded a photo montage of my daughter’s 18 birthday with Colbie Calliat’s “Bubbly” and it uploaded fine (with tons of comments and birthday wishes) and as I tried to uploaded another photo montage for my son’s birthday today, they refuse the video with the “infringement” notice thingy like everyone here experienced. So I was confused and checked if my photo montage of my daughter was there, and yes it was still there. But 2 minutes later when I tried to look at it again, it was GONE! No notice for that one, I don’t think. Geez, stupid Facebook, I am moving to Google+ and hope all my friends would too! But I follow the tip to upload the video through dropbox.com and load the link… And voila, now my friends can see what a beautiful journey my son had gone through. I am going to do the same with my daughter’s.

Listen Folks…..TO PROVE THERE IS NOBODY REALLY WATCHING EXCEPT MACHINES!
Try this, it works: Find a youtube version of the song, include it at end of your video sequence, detach the audio, delete your original itunes version (that ironically enough, you’ve paid for), move the fresh audio track up to replace it, delete the youtube video clip, re-submit your video. There is no digital signature. Again for me, i don’t intend to profit, in fact one video I made to promote fund raising for the Great North Run had a Snow Patrol track and was rejected despite my appeals, I have now been completely prevented from uploading videos any more. So I just use a youtube link.
WHATEVER YOU DO, DON’T GO BACK AND TAG OLD VIDEOS – IT WILL BE RE-EXAMINED FOR COPYRIGHT AND REMOVED. I lost 2 videos with my kids this way, lucky I still have quicktime versions at home.

US copyright law prohibits the attaching of ANY video to an audio recording without written permission from each copyright holder (this is why you’ll never hear any of The Beatles’ original recordings in movies, on television, or in commercials). The fact that a song is downloaded legally is irrelevant.

I uploaded a video for a school project with a My Chemical Romance song in the background, just so I could show my partner what I had done so far. Now I can’t upload videos ever again because of a stupid project that was only going the be on Facebook for four minutes. I’m pissed as hell for a number of reasons. I bought not only the song, but the entire album with my own money. I’m not gaining any profit from the video. I also have friends and family who live on the other side of the country who like to see videos of stuff that I do with my horse, and they’ll never get to see any of that again. I can understand removing the video, but removing the entire right to upload videos is fucking ridiculous. Does anyone know if there’s a way that I can get that privilege back?

I get that the songs are copyrighted. That is done to stop others from financially gaining from the artist’s work. And I get that the artists would like to maintain some creative control of that music (ie it not being used to advertise something the artist doesn’t support…like it being bought and used for a political cause or such without that artist’s specific permission) But doesn’t playing music anywhere publicly kind of null and void your right to control it exclusively.
Once you put it “out there” do you really have an expectation of complete ownership? After all it is my understanding that once I post my photos on Facebook, they become Public Domain and anyone can use them if they choose…even for profit if they want. So let me get this straight. I can post my own creative work on Facebook and it’s free for the world to steal and profit from but the same isn’t true for musicians? Where’s the fairness in that?

I had a video removed from facebook for the song ozzy see you on the other side. I used this song for a friend that had just killed himself. I uploaded the video to youtube and you tube accepted it BUT no one in the states could view the video. The song was copyrighted in numerous countries including the u.s.. Later, The copyright was lifted in the u.s.. I linked the video to facebook from youtube and what do you know, It works great now. Only one problem, Facebook will not let me upload videos straght to facebook even though the reason they banned me me from uploading video was because of that song even though it is now not copyrighted in the u.s. How do you get this ban from facebook lifted? From now on, I will try to upload to youtube first to see if its copy righted since youtube will post it anyway although any song will be unable to be seen by the countrys in which it is copyrighted. Copyrighted songs on youtube can change from day to day yet Even though the video I TRIED TO UPLOAD TO FACEBOOK WAS COPYRIGHTED IN THE U.S. AT THE TIME BUT NO LONGER IS. FACEBOOK STILL WONT LET ME POST A VIDEO UNLESS I GO THROUGH YOUTUBE FIRST. How is a person supposed to know? How does this ban get lifted from facebook??????

This pisses me off so much. Our school had a tug of war for a field day thing on the last day of school. I made it into a video and added some background music from some obscure artist. I put it up, and it notified me that it had finished uploading. I clicked on the link, and it said “this page does not exist”. 20 minutes later I got a letter saying that it had been removed. I tried it again with a different song and it did the same thing. I am running out of space on my computer. GRR.

I tried to up load a video I made of pictures of my family with the song “Better Then I Once Was” By; Tim McGraw today, I clearly stated who the music was by at the start of the video, yet Facebook removed it anyways, I don’t see the harm If the copyright is stated who it belongs to, so it was clear I was not trying to claim it as my own… It’s a video of my family pictures for my family & friends, to make profit off of…!

Well, I just don’t buy ‘commercial’ music anymore. It’s my way of tell the musicians to get over themselves. I always just go to a cover band to find what I’m looking for now.
I understand a recording industry wanting to protect their interest, personal use should be exempted…ie, if I’m not making money off of it, they should worry about it

Copyright issues have gotten out of control. If I can buy a CD, and play it for a friends at a party, why can’t I create a video with the same music and share it with fb friends? I see no difference if I’m not profiting in any way.

We’ve been travelling around UK in a motor home for 4 months and I spent hours putting photos into slideshows using my apple mac in mac templates with the music that comes with templates and then used the Share facility on mac to post to FB for family at home. They were all removed by FB team and they have blocked me from uploading anything at all, even photos. If we’re not meant to do this then why does apple give us the means to do it and share it to FB?? I have written to apple for some clarification on this but they have not responded. I just don’t go on FB any more – screw their social media!!

This morning I uploaded a clip that i took of my two dogs playing with my rabbit that died today. You can barely hear the TV in the background (nothing intelligible at all actually) as we were sitting in the living room when I decided to get video of them on my phone. I never edited or added any music nor is there any music playing anywhere on my 30 second video.. And it’s gone. This is pathetic and just made me even sadder than I already was. Thanks for that, Facebook. :*(

I recently today uploaded a video of my daughter with background music that I bought from iTunes and it told me the same thing.. I got the same message from Facebook… If I buy the music then I should be able to use it, I don’t consider that illegal if I bought the music.

In my case, I am a blogger and I usually upload videos at YouTube and Facebook with the purpose to demo my work or to educate people in the field of photography, arts and electronics. Facebook has been deleting my videos which I believe is under the provision of Copyright’s “Fair Use”.(17 U.S.C. § 107). Now I just found out that Facebook doesn’t honor “Fair use” because sections (17 U.S.C. § 107) were not included in their “About Copyright” article.
COPYRIGHT’S FAIR USE (17 U.S.C. § 107)
Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 17 U.S.C. § 106 and 17 U.S.C. § 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include:
the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
the nature of the copyrighted work;
the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors.

hi all ,i have read all your comments i agree with what you say, i contacted the copy right governing body and they want to charge me £344 for permission to put on facebook, but i have to do quartely and yearly spreadsheats of viewers clicks etc and i get charged if viewed. tried contacting record labels and artist with my videos to get permission to no joy they are not interested.we are in limbo and cant get out
my videos are diving videos and without background music they are very boring

I agree 100% this is ridiculous; every video that I have posted which have been the same repeatively they keep deleting. How is it any different than those videos on youtube with your own pics n words and someone elses music in the background. You wanna make your videos fun to watch and just watching with no music is very boring and dull. I am so frigging frustrated right now.

I posted a video of my daughter’s dance recital and it was removed within 10 minutes for copyright. The dance studio pays for the rights to use the songs.. why can I post a video of a concert and not a dance recital?

i have video in a group that i admin, and unable to delete. there is no delete button, yet it shows in ‘photos of ‘. the poster is no longer in the group too.

This seems to be a power grab by the RIAA. Many of their anti piracy attempts have crashed and burned. The only thing that seems to work well is a cease ans desist order. I think that FB is afraid of getting theirs because they are, in a sense, hosting copyrighted material. So instead of fighting these fascists, they will roll over and play dead. It is my guess that you could have your 3 year old playing a recorder and you would get tagged for copyright infringement.

This just happened to me, facebook removed my own music video. The worst part is I AM the actual composer and the copyright owner of the music, and I have written permission from the artist who created the art featured in the video. There has been no copyright violation, and they removed it , without as much as asking !
The re appeal ticket did not work either, it gave errors..
