Charlie Rose Interview with MySpace Co-Founders Chris DeWolfe & Tom Anderson

If you ever joined MySpace your 1st friend is Tom Anderson. Listen/Watch this great interview with the founders of MySpace and Charlie Rose.

Some interesting metrics that I jotted down:

  • 18 Million MySpace Mobile users per month
  • “MySpace is a social portal that helps people discover content, culture and people” — Chris DeWolfe, co-founder of MySpace
  • Obama has over 1 MM friends on MySpace
  • MySpace is in China for the past year
  • Market Value is in the Billions
  • Murdoch was laughed at for paying to much money
  • Businesses can create profiles on MySpace now similar to Facebook Pages
  • Registered over 1 MM voters
  • MyAds launched recently (has anybody tried it?) – can spend as little as $20
  • 20 MM Small and Medium-size businesses in the U.S.
  • “I believe we do catch most of them” Chris DeWolfe — when asked whether they catch inappropriate profiles/content
  • Tom Anderson plays World of Warcraft, Xbox Live, Wii (Charlie Rose asked what the Wii was..oh my Charlie)
  • MySpace has all the shows from nbc, fox, all shows produced by Sony, and all music videos.

Social Media Outreach via Blog It by Typepad

In launching a new product at a company in today’s web 2.0 world you need to update all your company’s presence on each social network.  Here a sample scenario that the person in charge of social media needs to do when a product launches:

  • Update corporate blog with post and tag. 
  • Make sure Technorati profile is setup, blog is claimed and pinged
  • Update Facebook fan page with photos, videos, and message to fans
  • Update MySpace page with post and message to “friends”
  • Update your statuses on Facebook (your personal account if you promote yourself as the company evangelist), Twitter (your corporate account), Tumblr, and Pownce
  • Post, create sets, and tag photos to Flickr (if time join groups related to company and add photos to group)

As you can see it is quite a bit of work, time consuming and repetitive in some cases. Can a company create a tool that can manage my social media outreach to each of my networks? Blogging company Typepad created a Facebook application called Blog It that can update my statuses and blogs all within one site. I can link up my social network profiles, enter in one status and/or blog, and it gets sent to the respective sites. Pretty cool and time saving!  Blog It is tied into the following social networks as of this posting (5:32 PM 4/19/2008):

  • TypePad
  • Blogger
  • LiveJournal
  • Movable Type
  • Pownce
  • Tumblr
  • Twitter
  • Vox
  • WordPress.com
  • WordPress.org Site

Unfortunately, it’s not tied into all the social networks that I need to update and their blog editor is just a simple text box. This is just version 0.1 of the software and it is fairly simple to connect to another network via APIs so great start by Typepad! I look forward to the next release and maybe other competitive products because there is a real need out there for us folks managing social media outreach for companies.

Corporate Adoption of Twitter

If you are a Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, or any social network site user you’ve probably updated your status to tell your friends what you are doing at that very moment. Most of your friends probably have written a smart-ass comment or completely ignored you. I have on several occasions I posted a status that was completely absurd just to get a reply back since I knew people were reading my news feed and checking Facebook hourly. Well, now is the age that people are so attached to brands that they want to know what is happening in real-time with the company. Either they own the product or perhaps they are are an investor and want to know the latest and greatest.

Twitter, a San Francisco company started in March 2006, has made status updates a public way of spreading the word about what you as an individual or company doing. No longer is your network of friends reading your status but the public has access and can opt-in to follow you. The question is how do you effectively spread the word about your brand via Twitter. Here are some questions and to-do’s when wanting to get Twitter adopted at a company:

  1. Get all the influencers in a room and give them a demo of the potential of Twitter and examples of companies using it (consumer brands such as JetBlue, Southwest, and CNN). Examples of influencers can be executives (CEO, CFO, COO, VPs), top engineers in the company, top designer in the company, pr manager, marketing manager, event managers.
  2. Ask your influencers what do people want to hear about? Is it what they are working on? Which trade-show are they going to attend next? Which product was released today? There was got to be some piece of valuable, public data that changes frequently that your customers/users/investors want to know about.
  3. If you are successful in getting influencers within your company to adopt/use Twitter then the question is how to tell the world. The first step would be to update your corporate web site but that is easier said than done. Twitter is just one piece of the puzzle in your overall social media strategy. What other ways can people get to know you better – podcasts, vlogs, badges, widgets, and/or Flickr stream.

Definitely a lot of work needs to be done but I firmly believe this is a new way of communicating. Instead of an email newsletter where you hope people read it, heck even open it, status updates via social networks where your company has a presence should be your focus in 2008.
