Video Streaming Apps Coming to Android?

All the hub-bub yesterday on Twitter was Google’s release of the Android SDK 1.5 Preview, aka Cupcake. Of course, the one feature that I’m waiting for a developer to build upon is the video recording api. Either Seesmic, Qik, Stickam, YouTube, KyteTV, or Ustream should seriously look at building an Android application cause I would use it in a heartbeat! Last year was the year of Nokia and video streaming apps but this year will be Android-based devices with that functionality courtsey of the Cupcake SDK. Stickam this week did come out with a Java-based app on Android but only for viewing purposes so hopefully this new api will lead them in the right direction in their product plans. What do you think? Here are a few questions to start a conversation:

  • Are video streaming mobile apps what consumers are looking for?
  • Is there enough market for them?
  • How much would you pay for a video streaming app?
  • What is the business model for video streaming companies? Add based on the web site or is their ads within the mobile app for viewing their content?

For more information on the latest Android SDK release here are a few blogs that I recommend you read. If you have any others post a comment below as well.

3G iPhone with no video but wait till July 11?

It was finally announced..the moment everyone was waiting for – 3G iPhone! The product is really focused on data downloading whether photos, email (Microsoft Exchange included), and videos via the iTunes network or YouTube. Applications are being developed and from the samples shown at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco announcement the development time is very short (eBay created an app in 6 weeks). But this product is more about data downloading/viewing than lifecasting (sharing of photos, videos, and life experiences to your contacts). At least for now. July 11 is when it goes on sale and developers have one month to build their product. Will we see video integrations in one month? Companies like Qik or Flixwagon could get their engineers cranking on an iPhone but we will just have to wait and see. June 9 was all about Apple marketing to the developer community and on July 11th we shall see if it really worked. Let the countdown begin.

New Apple Products Coming Soon

Oh my…New Apple iPhone with perhaps 3G, GPS, and a front-facing camera? I’m so giddy in anticipation! I was trying to follow the Steve Jobs announcement on crunchgear (a TechCrunch site) but it is crashing as well as qik.com (live video streaming web site). Oh well. I guess I’ll just have to keep refreshing the Apple Store site.

Video Interview with Tradeafavor.com

I was at MakerFaire 2008 in San Mateo, California and I meet CEO Stephen Frick showcasing his new social bartering application called Trade a Favor exclusively on Facebook.  Here is the video interview recorded using my Nokia n95 streaming live to the web on qik.com and later posted to YouTube. The audio isn’t the greatest but this is just the first of many tests using a 3G mobile phone and AT&T network to do mobile video streaming.
